About ‹Bleilaus›

It started at some point on a cold winter day in the year 2010. After several month of being on the lookout without any success, I got a call from an old printer who was in possession of an old FAG Swiss Proof 40. Since he had no usage anymore, he offered me his whole studio with several drawers and the press itself. I agreed at the drop of a hat. I was able to pick up a first load which consisted the press and a single drawer. Temporarily, I sheltered them in a small garage without power. That was long ago. Since then, I've been building up a small studio in an old cardboard factory. I do work with lead, wood type as well as contemporary methods like adhesive foil and lino- or woodcuts. Besides creating free work I started getting my first small orders. Whether business cards, posters or invitations I always enjoy combining my learned graphic design skills with the craftsmanship in letterpress.

About ‹R.B. Typolab (BfGZ/ZHdK)›

R.B. Typolab (BfGZ/ZHdK) is a university workshop based in Zürich. It arose from a fusion of two workshops (Werkstätte f. Typographie und Buchdruck BfGZ / Typowerkstatt HGKZ, today ZHdK) in the year 2000.
Rudolf Barmettler uses this workshop as an introduction to typography for first year students of the Visual Communication Department (ZHdK) as well as for interdisciplinary typographic induction weeks of the Department of Design (ZHdK). Additionally he has been been teaching an evening workshop (40 evenings a year) for over 10 years now. BfGZ teacher René Wäger and Gilde Gutenberg teach Polygraf aprentices in the second year. In the workshop there are about 650 cases of lead type, wood type, bakelite type and magnesium type. Besides the 3 FAG proofpresses there there are other pieces of equipment that include a Vandercook Uni IV (Serial 21477), a Heidelberg Platen press, a Giez platen press, some waxing machines, a FAG heavy duty saw trimmer and some more...
Rudolf Barmettler's students mostly produce business cards, invitation cards, flyers, cd-covers, book-covers, posters and poster series, calendars, poetry books, magazines, proofs and lots of printing experiments.

By doing this, we aim to bring together the worlds of contemporary, computer-aided design on the one hand and the traditional methods of manual typesetting on the other, in order to achieve exciting new synergies.
