Ilkka Kärkkäinen on the FAG Swiss Proof 40 ‹I found this press from the old warehouse where it has been about 20 years. I dont know anything about the origin of this machine. The condition was’n so good; dirt and grease was everywhere and the feeding table was missing. But i bought it and clean it and now its in my studio. I’m learning more and more everyday and i have been already been printing some art prints and a serie of prints where i combined giclée printed photos and letterpress. I’m using the machine about once or twice a week...›

We have spent some time working on de-rusting and cleaning each component to get it back to full working order. We are currently waiting for 3-phase to be installed before using for the first time in 20 years.›

…and where we found it - at the back of an artists shed!
Both rollers had melted over the bed and the metal had rusted badly.
Every part was dismantled and cleaned thoroughly
The metal rollers have 'pitted' and some marks have been left on the bed after sanding though to touch it feels smooth.

About Konstnärs Kollektiv Verkstan Göteborg
KKV Göteborg is a volunteer-run collective artist workshop, with many departments ranging from print to wood to steel to ceramics, glass. KKV also has a modern electronics workshop, including facilities for building circuits, two 3D printers, a Shopbot CNC milling machine, and a large industrial laser cutter. We have recently acquired our FAG proofpress and will be setting it up along with other small-scale printers such as Risograph into a new workshop for artist publications.

Kimmo Kestinen on the FAG Swiss Proof 40 ‹It is used mostly for posters etc. The machine is a part of semipermanent exhibition about printing presses of the 1950's. It is a part of a larger exhibition «Our town», which is about doing all sorts of things together. The press was important media for the Labour movement. What is significant, that this part of the exhibition is «living», that is, you can see all sorts of printing press activities in real life using the same methods that were in use in letterpresses. This exhibition has gained some interest in modern typographers also.›

About The Finnish Labour Museum Werstas
The Finnish Labour Museum Werstas is based in the historical Finlayson cotton mill area right in the heart of Tampere. At Werstas, you can visit the Textile Industry Museum, the Steam Engine Museum as well as the Labour Museum's changing and permanent exhibitions. The exhibitions at Werstas offer an overview of the history of the industrial era, worker population and civil society from different perspectives. The constantly refreshed exhibitions present the most interesting events from the history of social issues, workers’ culture, visual arts and politics. At Werstas, ordinary people take centre stage and their everyday lives, work and the differences between them are recounted in the form of memorable stories. Werstas is a versatile museum with a difference. About R.B. Typolab (BfGZ/ZHdK)
R.B. Typolab (BfGZ/ZHdK) is a university workshop based in Zürich. It arose from a fusion of two workshops (Werkstätte f. Typographie und Buchdruck BfGZ / Typowerkstatt HGKZ, today ZHdK) in the year 2000. Rudolf Barmettler uses this workshop as an introduction to typography for first year students of the Visual Communication Department (ZHdK) as well as for interdisciplinary typographic induction weeks of the Department of Design (ZHdK). Additionally he has been been teaching an evening workshop (40 evenings a year) for over 10 years now. BfGZ teacher René Wäger and Gilde Gutenberg teach Polygraf aprentices in the second year. In the workshop there are about 650 cases of lead type, wood type, bakelite type and magnesium type. Besides the 3 FAG proofpresses there there are other pieces of equipment that include a Vandercook Uni IV (Serial 21477), a Heidelberg Platen press, a Giez platen press, some waxing machines, a FAG heavy duty saw trimmer and some more... Rudolf Barmettler's students mostly produce business cards, invitation cards, flyers, cd-covers, book-covers, posters and poster series, calendars, poetry books, magazines, proofs and lots of printing experiments.
