R. Barmettler on the FAG Control 405 ‹Since this press has an adjustable press bed, we use it for very different paper thicknesses from 30g/m2 up to 300g/m2. After undertaking serious and systematic concept and design development work, we print mostly business cards, stationery, invitation cards, book covers and small posters. We also use this press for printing additional elements to existing brochures. This is the most used proof press at R.B. Typolab.›

R.B. Typolab (BfGZ/ZHdK) is a university workshop based in Zürich. It arose from a fusion of two workshops (Werkstätte f. Typographie und Buchdruck BfGZ / Typowerkstatt HGKZ, today ZHdK) in the year 2000. Rudolf Barmettler uses this workshop as an introduction to typography for first year students of the Visual Communication Department (ZHdK) as well as for interdisciplinary typographic induction weeks of the Department of Design (ZHdK). Additionally he has been been teaching an evening workshop (40 evenings a year) for over 10 years now. BfGZ teacher René Wäger and Gilde Gutenberg teach Polygraf aprentices in the second year. In the workshop there are about 650 cases of lead type, wood type, bakelite type and magnesium type. Besides the 3 FAG proofpresses there there are other pieces of equipment that include a Vandercook Uni IV (Serial 21477), a Heidelberg Platen press, a Giez platen press, some waxing machines, a FAG heavy duty saw trimmer and some more... Rudolf Barmettler's students mostly produce business cards, invitation cards, flyers, cd-covers, book-covers, posters and poster series, calendars, poetry books, magazines, proofs and lots of printing experiments.
R. Barmettler on the FAG Control 525 ‹We bought this press in the year 2000 from FAG Lausanne for 464.40 CHF. We originally used to run this press as a semi-automatic press, but since the fusion of the workshops we modified it to be hand-cranked for use by our undergraduate students.
After undertaking serious and systematic concept and design development work, we use this press for poster jobs up to the size of 50x70cm. We also use it for invitation cards and artistic experiments.›
